Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserve Candidate – Pathway 1: (CLOSED)
A two-year pathway during which Reserve Candidates must pass a 6-month probation period and successfully complete an approved *EMT program during year one. Reserve Candidates who successfully complete probation and EMT certification will be able to participate the *ARC Non-Affiliate Firefighter I Academy during year 2 while simultaneously serving as a Sacramento Volunteer Reserve Trainee.
In order to qualify for entrance into the Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserves Pathway 1 you must:

• Be at least 18 years of age. (by start of Academy)
o High School Graduates who are 17 and have participated in an approved Sacramento Fire Department High School Youth program will be considered on a case by case basis.
• Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
• Ability to legally work in the United States
• Pass a written examination or have taken and passed the FCTC test within the last 12 months
• Pass a physical agility test or have proof of passing the CPAT within the last 12 months
• Pass an oral interview
• Pass an extensive fire department background check
• Not have felonies or other legal reasons not to be accepted
• Possess and maintain a valid California Class “C” driver license by end of 6-month probation.

Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserve Trainee – Pathway 2: (CLOSED)

A pathway where qualified individuals serve their first 5 months attending the *ARC Non-Affiliate Firefighter I Academy beginning August 16th, 2021 as a Reserve Trainee. After successfully earning their Firefighter I certification through the ARC Academy and successful completion of the SFD Emergency Vehicle Operator Course and obtaining their Class C Firefighter Endorsement candidates will begin serving as a Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserve.
In order to qualify for entrance into the Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserves Pathway 2 you must:

• Meet all the qualifications of Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserve Pathway 1 and
• Possess a valid National Registry EMT card and current American Heart Association CPR card. (Applicants who completed EMT didactic training and had their EMT skills training cancelled due to COVID-19 will be considered on a case by case basis.)

*PLEASE NOTE: Cost associated with enrolling in an Emergency Medical Technician class, enrolling in the ARC Non-Affiliated Firefighter 1 Academy and/or the Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserves are the sole responsibility of the individual and are not paid or provided by the Sacramento Fire Department or the Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserves. The estimated cost for EMT programs is approximately $2500 per student but varies by institution. Estimated cost for ARC Fire Academy is approximately $3500-$3700. Financial Aid is available to those applicants who qualify through ARC. Estimated uniform cost for all levels of Sacramento Fire Volunteer Reserves is approximately $50 – $75.
