The Sacramento City Fire Department is responsible for the protection of life and property and for providing Emergency Medical Service to the community. The Fire Reserves attend the Sacramento city volunteer Fire Training Academy and receive basic training in firefighting methods, equipment operation & maintenance, physical fitness, fire science concepts, and a variety of other subjects.
- What do we Require?
In order to qualify for entrance into the Volunteer Fire Reserves you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age. (on or before testing)
- Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Ability to legally work in the United States
- Pass a written examination
- Pass a physical agility test
- Pass an oral interview
- Pass an extensive fire department background check
- Not have felonies or other legal reasons not to be accepted
- Possess and maintain a valid California Class “C” driver license
Special Qualifications:
- Ability to obtain a Class B, or C driver license or appropriate endorsements (***Failure to obtain the license will be cause for termination***)
- Wear respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaved when it interferes with the safe fitting of such equipment
- Reside within 35 air miles of the W st, Xst, Bus. 80 & 99 Interchange
- Pass the physical agility test each year as a condition of the reserve program

- Hose Drag
- Hose Carry/Stair Climb
- Hose Hoist
- Overhead Hose Carry
- Citizen Rescue
- Dry Hose Drop
- Physical agility test includes
- It is recommended to not be in paramedic school or starting within the next 6 months. During the firefighter one academy, all reserve requirements must be adhered to.
